Iola Fudge - check image, edit index

 Iola Fudge


The June 1900 census in Dooly, Georgia shows Iola Fudge born Feb 1897 in Georgia. Her only sibling is her brother Leslie and her parents are Matilda Smith and Richard Fudge.

The 1910 census shows Leslie Fudge as an adopted son. His sister, also adopted, showed as Fela Fudgel in the index born about 1898. So I wondered if Fela and Iola were the same person.

I checked the image and compared the first letter F in Fudge to the first letter in her first name. It looks like an I to me and the next letter looks more like an o than an e. I reviewed the page for other examples of how letters were written by the census taker. FamilySearch let me edit the index to show her first name as Iola.

Checking the image also allows you to see other information not in the index. The 1910 census was taken in May and her age 12 estimate fits with an 1898 birth year given Feb as her birth month in the 1900 census. If the birth month were after May then age 12 would fit an 1897 birth year.
