Judy McLean married Charles Chavers (or Chavis)

See how I sorted through the sources with name variations, a wide range of ages, and uncertain links to parents. Let me know if you find additional information or would come to different conclusions.

Judy McLean married Charles Chavers

Merged record of Judy Chavis into GZS1-BPD Judy Chavers

The merged record had Judy Chavis as the main name due to its earliest source in 1879. This record did not have any census sources. The name Judy Graham is only in 1938 death record of a son. Graham may be maiden name or second married name.

The record for Judy Chavers has a source with her name as Judy McLean which is assumed to be her maiden name but could be from a second marriage.

The 1870, 1900, and 1910 census were attached to Judy and Charles Chavers. These sources fit with names, places, race, etc, but there is a wide range of birth year estimates - 1830 to 1845 for Charles and 1835 to 1850 for Judy. It doesn’t seem likely that there is a separate couple with the same names in the same place, etc.

The 1900 census says she had 7 of 10 children alive at that time. Merging the Chavis record added children to get up to 10 (12 with 2 likely duplicates or other kin) and the children names fit with the 1870 census. These are names included with notes on range of birth year estimates in 1870 census vs other sources:

Eliza 1858 vs 1872
Betsy 1862
Lucy 1860
Sarah 1864
George H 1869 vs 1879
(Mingo 1866 and Alice 1868 are in 1870 census but were not in the Chavis or Chavers records)

The 1900 census says they had been married 30 years so an 1870 estimate is used. They may have been married much earlier based on the ages of children. Around 1870 could be a formal marriage after emancipation.

The 1900 census also includes 7 grandchildren born from 1881 to 1897. Research is needed to determine their parents. The 1910 census has 5 grandchildren born 1884 to 1899.

Note on daughter Eliza

Eliza Chavers is listed as a 28 year old widow in the 1900 census with 6 of 6 children alive. She is a daughter to the head of the household and there are 7 grandchildren in the house so likely 6 of those 7 are hers.

Her birthdate is listed as January 1872. Since the grandchildren show 1881 to 1897 birth years, her age should be higher than 28. This suggests that the record for Eliza Chavers in the 1870 census as age 12 would likely be the same person. The 1858 birth year estimate could be off a bit as well as the 1881 marriage record shows a birth year of 1860.

The 1900 census shows her and her children with her maiden surname of Chavers rather than her married name Mackey. The birth years of the youngest 2 grandchildren implies her husband Henry Mackey died before 1900 and about 1897.

Note that at times a census record shows someone as widowed when actually they are divorced or separated. So you would look for additional sources for the husband.
